In 2024, the city of Szeged celebrates the 120th anniversary of one of its most renowned and significant architectural landmarks, the Water Tower in Szent István square. Operated by Szegedi Vízmű Zrt., the tower is not only a defining feature of the cityscape but also holds immense industrial historical importance. Built as Hungary’s first reinforced concrete water tower, its construction was a remarkable engineering feat of its time and remains fully functional to this day.
The History of the Water Tower
Constructed between 1903 and 1904, the Water Tower in Szent István square was designed by Dr. Szilárd Zielinski, a pioneer of reinforced concrete technology in Hungary. Szeged announced a competition in 1903 for a 1,000 m³ water tower to integrate into the city’s emerging water supply network. Zielinski’s innovative design, made entirely of reinforced concrete, was unprecedented in Hungary at the time. The project, executed by Freund Henrik and Sons, was completed in just 18 months using only manual labour and basic tools.
The tower comprises two main parts: the 1,000 m³ reservoir and the supporting structure, which includes a spiral staircase leading to an observation platform. The structure is topped with a 9-meter reinforced concrete flagpole.
The tower was officially inaugurated in November 1904 and quickly became one of most prominent landmarks in the city of Szeged. Over the decades, it has retained its functional and symbolic significance, standing as Hungary’s oldest still-operating reinforced concrete water tower.
Today, the water tower is maintained by Szegedi Vízmű Zrt., a member of the Veolia Group, which ensures its preservation and integration with modern technologies. Through careful maintenance and innovative solutions, the water tower remains a vital component of Szeged’s water supply system while honouring its architectural heritage and adapting to future challenges.
120th Anniversary Celebrations – Special Events
To mark this milestone, Szegedi Vízmű Zrt. has planned a series of special events. On Saturday, October 26, 2024, a spectacular light show will illuminate the water tower from 6:30 PM to 6:50 PM in Szent István square. This dazzling display is part of the city’s “Perfect Weekend” (Tökéletes Hétvége) festival, taking place on October 26–27.
During the two-day event, the water tower will open its doors to the public from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, offering visitors the chance to explore its interior and enjoy panoramic views of Szeged from the observation deck.
The October festivities have become a cherished tradition, featuring colourful programs and a popular pumpkin carving competition that attracts thousands of visitors each year. This year’s celebration offers a unique opportunity to honour the water tower’s 120-year history and highlight its enduring significance to the city of Szeged.
