For the first time, the “Talent Deserves a Chance” program was represented with its own stand at the Art Market Budapest contemporary art fair, held from October 16 to 19. The event is a milestone in the initiative’s history, as visitors were able—for the first time—to view and purchase artworks created by children living in state care and their mentors.
Spotlight on young talents
At the exhibition, supported by Veolia, the general public could get to know more closely the young people participating in the program, whose artistic development is supported through professional mentoring. The event also provided an opportunity for interested visitors to purchase the artworks displayed. All proceeds from the sale of the children’s works go entirely toward supporting these young talents, while the mentor artists support the program by voluntarily donating a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of their own works.
International professional background
The stand’s professional leadership was undertaken by Karen van Hoey Smith, Creative Director of the London-based Visual Artists Association (VAA) and an internationally recognized curator. The VAA is an international organization that supports artists at every stage of their careers through professional advice, development programs, and an inspiring community presence. Karen van Hoey Smith’s professional involvement had a motivating effect on both the young artists and the audience.
A new feature of this year’s exhibition was the “Master’s Choice” selection, in which Hungarian and international artists chose their favorite children’s artworks. This gesture also served as professional recognition, and reassured the young creators that what they do is valuable to others as well.
Everyone deserves a chance
The aim of the Talent Deserves a Chance initiative is to provide children living in state care with a tool for self-expression and personal development. Art is present in the program as a creative activity, yet its developmental and community-building impact is undeniable.
We are grateful to everyone who visited our stand, met the children and their mentors, and supported them with their presence, attention, or purchase. Every kind word and every artwork purchased helps bring these young artists closer to achieving their dreams—because truly, talent deserves a chance.
