Veolia Acquired the Gönyű Power Plant

A key element of European energy sector regulation has been added to Veolia’s portfolio

With the closing of the transaction between Veolia and the Uniper Group on January 6, 2025, the Gönyű power plant came under the 100% ownership of the Veolia group, playing a decisive role in regulating the Hungarian electricity network. With an installed capacity of 428 megawatts, the plant is not only one of the country's most modern facilities, but as critical infrastructure it is also a guarantee of network stability.

The combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant located in Győr-Moson-Sopron County is capable of restarting the entire network after a possible nationwide blackout (“black start”), and plays a significant role in the market for system-level balancing services. The plant is of prime importance in Veolia’s GreenUp strategy, which focuses on promoting energy efficiency and the integration of renewable energy sources.

“This significant transaction is an important milestone for the group, which is a key player in regulatory and bioenergy in Hungary, in line with our GreenUp strategic plan. Our more than 25 years of experience and expertise in the sector ensure that we can continue to operate the Gönyű power plant efficiently and safely, contributing to the stability and flexibility of the domestic electricity system. This acquisition fits well and complements our regulatory portfolio, which includes an advanced virtual power plant control center and other existing regulatory energy supply assets,” said György Palkó, CEO of Veolia Hungary.

Through the transaction, Veolia further strengthens its position in the Hungarian and European energy sector, providing an answer to the network fluctuations associated with the spread of renewable energy sources. The innovative technology and outstanding capacity of the Gönyű power plant ensure the continuous availability of regulatory energy, which is increasingly important during the period of energy transition.

With this strategic step, the Veolia group’s commitment to the sustainable development of the energy, water, and waste management market has been further strengthened.
