World Water Day at the Szeged Water Tower – Protecting Water is Our Common Cause!

Between March 21 and 23, Szegedi Vízmű Zrt. once again organized the traditional World Water Day Open Days, aiming to present the significance of water and the importance of its protection in everyday life to the public.

The three-day event was once again hosted by the water tower at Szent István Square, where visitors could participate in interactive programs, exciting experiments, and fun yet educational demonstrations.

Programs for young and old

The programs helped deepen knowledge related to water protection in a playful way, while children gained entertaining and educational experiences. Participants also gained insight into the special properties of water within the event series supported by Szegedi Vízmű and Veolia.

On Friday, when school and kindergarten groups arrived, Andor Szűcs, a chemist from the Environmental Protection Department, captured the children's attention with spectacular experiments. The “Lava Lamp,” Phenolphthalein indicator, “Magic Milk” demonstration, and the experiment about non-Newtonian fluids all offered experiences that made various chemical and physical phenomena of water understandable even for the youngest. Those interested could also learn about the water cycle and the scientific aspects of water treatment.

Programs encouraging environmental awareness

The event not only entertained but also conveyed an important message. Thanks to the MONDOLÓ Association, children could learn the basics of nature and environmental protection through creative drawing tasks. During the event, young people could also create new street art works depicting water protection and aquatic habitats.

This year, the Szeged Zoo also set up at the venue: the zoo's staff greeted visitors with exciting tasks and animal facts. Young visitors solved tasks about various aquatic habitats while discovering how local wildlife connects to water.

Over the weekend, many families also arrived, who could admire not only the permanent exhibitions of the water tower but also the wonderful panorama of Szeged from the observation level. Participants received interactive publications and useful information to help them better understand the significance of water and how best to protect this valuable natural resource.

The selfie spots created by the Mechanical Operations Department were particularly popular at the event. Visitors could take photos at locations with the signs “Let’s protect our drinking water together! Be a water guardian or protector!” as well as in front of the photo walls.

Together for the protection of waters

Over the three days, an estimated 2,500–3,000 visitors came to the water tower. The growing interest in the program is not surprising, as water protection affects us all, and we increasingly feel that sustainable operations are essential for our future. On World Water Day, we do more and more each year to ensure that in the future, even more people join in promoting sustainable water management and environmentally conscious lifestyles!
