The power plant started producing combined heat and electricity in the 1960s. Its establishment was determined by the needs of the industrial heat consumers in its area, the Kispesti Textile Factory being the most important of them, therefore it was built primarily for industrial steam service, and then it was also involved in district heating when the housing estate in Lakatos Street was built.
The electricity capacity tender issued by MWM Zrt. in 1999 was a vital issue from the point of view of the continued operation of the power plant. After winning this, it was renovated as part of the investment project and the old power plant was supplemented with a modern gas-steam cycle gas turbine block.
The renovated and expanded power plant has been in commercial operation since 2004. Its environmental load largely meets the expectations of a power plant operating in a big city. Its overall efficiency exceeds 80% and its energy production is significantly more economical than the previous power plant.
In the heated districts of Kispest and Kőbánya, it produces and transfers heat energy for the heating and domestic hot water supply of more than 43,000 apartments for FŐTÁV Zrt.
