Gönyűi erőmű

The Gönyű power plant, which was commissioned in 2011 and underwent efficiency- and capacity-enhancing refurbishments in 2017 and 2021, was purchased by Veolia in 2024, and in January 2025 the integration of the power plant into the Veolia Group’s portfolio began.

The power plant, with an installed electric capacity of 433 MWe, operates with outstanding efficiency and provides nearly 8% of Hungary’s electricity generation, thereby supplying electricity to around 600,000 consumers. The power plant is a key element of the country’s critical infrastructure, as it is capable of providing a grid restoration so‑called black start service in the event of a complete outage of the national electricity grid.

The power plant represents the most modern and best technology that is sustainably available, and is one of the largest players in the market for system-level balancing ancillary services. Thanks to its flexible controllability, it is able to provide system-level balancing control, which is indispensable alongside the increasingly dynamic, yet uncertainly predictable, weather-dependent renewable generation.
