Pannon Hőerőmű Zrt., a member of the Veolia Group, is once again giving new life to discarded Christmas trees after the holidays. Biokom Nonprofit Kft., responsible for waste management in Pécs, has begun collecting the discarded trees, which will be used as renewable energy in the Pécs biomass power plant, serving homes and institutions in the city.
It has been a common practice for several years that the Christmas trees collected by Biokom Nonprofit Kft. are given a new purpose at the Pécs biomass power plant. The discarded trees are collected from residential areas in the city until January 31st, but there is also an opportunity to drop off Christmas trees after the beginning of February: residents can deliver trees to Pécs waste yards at any time. For recycling purposes, it is very important that the trees are free of decorations, stands, and other fasteners before being placed on the street.
Pannon Hőerőmű Zrt. provides district heating for more than 31,700 homes and 490 public institutions annually. By collecting and recycling discarded Christmas trees, they can generate a significant amount of clean, green energy this year as well. The collected Christmas trees are expected to arrive at the power plant at the end of January or beginning of February, where they will be shredded and mixed with other fuels before being fed into boiler number 10. Here they are reused as renewable energy in the form of electricity and district heating, which is not only environmentally beneficial but also contributes to sustainable and affordable energy supply for the residents of Pécs.
The Veolia Group, to which the Pécs power plant belongs, places great emphasis on its GreenUp strategy, which is committed to the local utilization of renewable energy sources, prioritizing sustainability and the circular economy. In this spirit, Pannon Hőerőmű processes fuel generated in the region, reducing the burden on landfills and the use of fossil fuels.
The Veolia Group is committed to supporting the sustainable development of Pécs with innovative solutions. Residents can continue to count on similar initiatives in the future, which contribute to a more livable future through waste recycling.
